Description
Compact growth with crisp, sweet fall fruit
The Ichi Ki Kei Jiro Persimmon Tree is a naturally compact, non-astringent variety that reaches about 10 to 15 feet tall at maturity. Its manageable size makes it a good fit for small yards while still providing attractive foliage and welcome shade.
Large, flat fruits ripen from September through October with a sweet flavor and crisp texture that can be enjoyed straight from the tree. Leaves change color to vibrant orange during fall, making it a beautiful ornamental tree. Tolerant of heat and humidity and only requiring 100–200 chill hours, it is easy to grow throughout warm regions of the Southeast, northern Florida, Texas, and California.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper, then backfill with native soil and water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season, keeping the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Once established, water during extended dry periods, especially while fruit is developing.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches, and thin lightly to maintain airflow and a balanced shape. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce fruit production.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to package directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
